How it works

Monte Legnoncino, the Legnone's less famous neighbour, looks out over Lake Como, and the route to the top is a quiet walk, fine for families with children too.

From the Rifugio Roccoli Lorla, at 1463 metres, you take the mule track closed to cars: an old gravel military road through larch and fir woods which, on a gentle gradient with a few bends, leads to a ledge above the lake with a small picnic area. The view is already wide from there. With a little more effort you soon reach the top, which looks over the Lario, the Pian di Spagna and the Alps: near the little church of San Sfirio the path narrows and needs care. You return the same way, or lengthen the walk with the loop of the Roccoli di Artesso and Lorla, where the Cadorna Line gun emplacements are.

  1. Two and a half kilometres and 250 metres of climb from the Rifugio Roccoli Lorla to the top at 1714 metres: over an hour up and three quarters of an hour down. The route is easy. April to October is the recommended period, depending on ground and snow conditions. Check the weather forecast before setting off.
  2. The hut is reached by car from Dervio on provincial road 67 up the Val Varrone to Tremenico, then by a very narrow paved road.
  3. Anyone wanting a full day can climb the Legnone instead, from the same hut, but that is a very different outing.
