Why go

Santa Maria Assunta is the parish church on the lakeshore at Santa Maria Rezzonico, in the municipality of San Siro.

Built for the Dominicans between 1464 and 1474, it retains Romanesque traces in its bell tower. The white marble doorway, in the Rodari manner, depicts the symbols of the Passion. In 1541 Sigismondo De Magistris painted the chapel of the Madonna of Mercy; his workshop painted the Assumption on the triumphal arch. Giovanni Pietro Gnocchi signed the high altarpiece in 1578. Around 1595 Michelangelo Carminati frescoed the chancel with scenes from the Virgin's life. The Musso marble font dates from 1511. Beside the church is a six-metre-high enclosure of walls, perhaps part of a late Roman fortress guarding the Strada Regina and the lake.
