DEVOTA. Art and the sacred in Bellano
An exhibition spread over seven places in Bellano, from its churches to the Lezzeno sanctuary.
Bellano
The confraternity's oratory on Bellano's square, with Gothic arches, the Baptist's statue of 1589 above the doorway and the dome structure decorated in 1582 with prophets, sibyls, angels and saints.
Santa Marta is a church on the square of the same name in Bellano, beside Santi Nazaro e Celso, formerly home to the Disciplini confraternity.
Its façade retains the Gothic arches of an earlier building. Above the doorway's broken pediment stands the statue of the Baptist from 1589, when the confraternity joined the Archconfraternity of the Lateran Basilica in Rome. The octagonal structure enclosing the dome has stucco and frescoes completed in 1582. Prophets and sibyls fill the arches, the major prophets the pendentives, and Nazaro, Celso, Martha and Mary Magdalene the drum; the vault has allegories and angels with the symbols of the Passion. The bell tower probably dates from the seventeenth century, as do the wooden chancel and sacristy furnishings.
