DEVOTA. Art and the sacred in Bellano
An exhibition spread over seven places in Bellano, from its churches to the Lezzeno sanctuary.
Bellano
The Campionese masters' Gothic facade in black and white bands, a few steps from the Bellano gorge.
In 1341 a flood of the Pioverna stream partly destroyed the old church of San Giorgio.
The rebuilding, commissioned by Giovanni Visconti, began in 1348 and was entrusted to three Campionese masters: Giovanni di Ugo da Campione, Antonio di Giacomo da Pellio Intelvi and Comolo di Goffredo da Osteno. The facade dates from those years: bands of white and black marble, three pointed doorways, a rose window of glazed terracotta in several concentric rings and, in the middle, a Gothic tabernacle with a statue of Saint Ambrose, also in the Campionese style. Inside, the nave and two aisles each end in an apse. The vaults are painted with grotesques and Old Testament stories, dated 1530 and largely redone in 1907. The bell tower and sacristy date from 1567. The church stands on the square a few metres from the entrance to the Orrido.
