Why go

The cave opens below the slope of the Sassi Grosgalli, rock walls dropping sheer into the lake, and can be reached only by boat.

Inside, sunlight makes plays of colour. Legend says the biggest fish of the lake hid here, the bulberi, as large as a man and impossible to catch for their size and their armour of scales. The name comes from these legendary fish, mentioned by Paolo Giovio, who in his Description of the Lario of 1537 also names the Sassi Grosgalli cliffs. The cave is also called the Grotta delle Carpe or Grotta Azzurra.

  • The cave opens near the Ponte del Diavolo, a bridge built between 1911 and 1917 to link Lezzeno with Bellagio.
  • Besides the cave, the rock of the Sassi Grosgalli is cut by gorges and ravines.
