Why go

San Vito is Cremia's former parish church, near the lake and recognisable by its two bell towers.

The smaller is traditionally dated to the eleventh century; the other has an octagonal upper section. The parish seat moved to San Michele in 1551. Inside, the nave and single aisle contain the fresco of the Virgin enthroned with Saints Sebastian and Roch, signed by Battista da Musso in 1499. Pietro Martire Della Torre's Crucifixion of 1540 was commissioned by the confraternity of Cremia's emigrants in Genoa. The emigrants' society in Florence owned the altar with the Virgin attributed to the school of Bergognone. The balustrade in coloured stones dates from 1736.

  • On one of the pillars that divide the nave from the aisle is a Saint Lucy of 1492, attributed to Battista da Musso.
  • At the entrance to the chancel survives a fragment of Romanesque fresco showing the heads of two figures, one with a halo.
  • On the left wall of the chancel hangs a late sixteenth-century canvas of the Martyrdom of Saint Agnes.

Highlights

  • The two bell towers side by side, the Romanesque one and the one with the octagonal drum
  • The Virgin enthroned with Saints Sebastian and Roch, 1499
  • Pietro Martire Della Torre's Crucifixion altarpiece, 1540
  • The 1736 balustrade in stones of different colours

Getting there

  • It stands in the hamlet of San Vito, on the shore, partly built against the houses. The almost level lakeside walk from Musso ends here; ASF Autolinee's C110 bus between Menaggio and Colico runs along the Regina road.

Accessibility

  • The lakeside walk from Musso to Cremia, which runs as far as the church, is almost level, on dirt road and porphyry paving, and suitable for pushchairs too.
