Why go

Sant'Anna is Onno's former parish church on the lakeshore, originally dedicated to San Fedele.

It was rebuilt between 1615 and 1651 because of frequent flooding: the lake-facing apse was demolished, the altar moved uphill and the façade rebuilt towards the water. Inside, medieval walls survive behind seventeenth-century additions beneath a barrel vault. Fifteenth-century frescoes have reappeared on these walls. Near the former apse is a curved wall painted by Lanfranco da Lecco. An inscription records the earlier dedication to San Fedele; the old cemetery enclosure stands to the south.

  • A medieval church turned round in the seventeenth century, with fifteenth-century frescoes brought back by the restoration.
  • The fragment painted by Lanfranco da Lecco, who worked on Milan Cathedral.

Highlights

  • The stretch of apse frescoed by Lanfranco da Lecco
  • The frescoes of the north wall
  • The frescoed seventeenth-century barrel vault
  • The altar and balustrades of coloured marbles

Getting there

  • It stands at Onno, outside the centre, on Via Garibaldi beside the lakeside lane of Via Sant'Anna; Onno lies on provincial road 583 between Lecco and Bellagio. In summer Navigazione Laghi's Lecco–Bellagio boats call at Onno.
