Why go

Santa Maria is the Rococo church in central Scaria, with frescoes by Carlo Innocenzo Carloni and stucco by his brother Diego.

Of late medieval origin, it was remodelled in the eighteenth century following a bequest from the artists' father. Diego worked here from 1711 and Carlo Innocenzo from 1724; breaks for other commissions stretched the work over decades. The date 1753 on the floor probably marks its completion. Works by other artists include Giovan Gaspare De Angelis's holy-water stoup with an angel, dated 1607. The 1781 pulpit is carved with a corn cob, the Carloni emblem. Beside it, the Museum of Sacred Art, founded in 1966 and renewed in 2015, holds works from the valley and the Paradisin of 1752, an elaborate display for the Forty Hours devotion.

  • The Rococo ensemble of frescoes and stucco by the Carloni brothers, alongside works by other Valle Intelvi artists.
  • The museum of the Valle Intelvi, a land of artists who worked all over Europe.
