Why go

The sanctuary of Sant'Anna is a church dedicated to the Madonna di Gelpio, on the road to Schignano three kilometres from Argegno.

The Madonna's image is on the scagliola high altar, Saint Anne's statue on a side altar. Tradition links its origin to a vow during the plague, around an earlier chapel of the Virgin. Frescoes from the first half of the seventeenth century are by Isidoro Bianchi (1581–1662), who was born in Campione and died there. They tell the Virgin's life, with the Assumption at the centre of the vault. White stucco frames and statues, including Joachim and Anne, are attributed to Giovan Battista Barberini of Laino and other Intelvi masters. A portico on slender granite columns fronts the façade; the bell tower bears the date 1824. The old mule track climbs the Telo valley past devotional shrines.
