Why go

Castello is Lierna's hamlet on the peninsula north of Riva Bianca, where houses incorporate the remains of an early twelfth-century fortification.

At its entrance stands the church of Santi Maurizio e Lazzaro, of Romanesque origin and documented in 1147. The saints painted on the façade probably date from the seventeenth-century remodelling. Late Gothic frescoes of Saints Stephen and Sebastian survive in the timber-roofed nave. The seventeenth-century altarpiece depicts Christ meeting Martha and Mary Magdalene.

  • A stone hamlet on a peninsula, walked round in a few minutes after a swim at Riva Bianca.
  • The two warrior saints painted on the chapel's front.

Highlights

  • Saints Maurice and Lazarus painted on the facade
  • The stone arch at the entrance to the hamlet
  • The late Gothic frescoes of Saint Stephen and Saint Sebastian

Getting there

  • It stands at the end of Riva Bianca, on the peninsula: from Lierna station about ten minutes downhill on foot, then along the beach.
