Why go

The sanctuary of the Madonna delle Lacrime is a Baroque church on a rise above Bellano and the lake.

It was built between 1690 and 1694 after the image of the Virgin was said to have wept before Bartolomeo Mezzera on 6 August 1688. Since 1706 it has kept the image above the altar in a case supported by six gilded bronze angels. The façade has statues of Saints Peter and Paul and a stained-glass window of the Coronation of the Virgin. The single-nave interior holds stucco, paintings and marbles, including black Varenna marble on frames, steps and balustrades. A passage around the altar has walls covered in ex-votos. A mule track links the sanctuary to the chapel of the miracle further down the slope.
