Why go

The Pietra Pendula is a glacial erratic in the woods at Montepiatto, above Torno, recognisable by its slender pedestal and mushroom-like shape.

The block of ghiandone granite came from the Val Masino, carried by glaciers to the lakeside slope. It rests on a pillar of local limestone, perhaps narrowed by human hands: the two rocks have different origins. It has been a regional natural monument since 1984. It is reached on foot from Montepiatto, linked to Torno by a stepped mule track.

  • A balancing erratic boulder, a natural monument of the Lombardy Region since 1984.
  • The climb from Torno is a stepped mule track, and nearby are the massi avelli, tombs carved into the stone.

  • The massi avelli of Montepiatto
  • The view over the first basin from the mule track

Getting there

  • On foot from Torno: from the upper village, Largo degli Alpini, a stepped mule track climbs to Montepiatto in under an hour; the boulder is close by, in the woods.
  • Torno is reached by boat or on the C130 bus from Como.
