Why go

The little church of San Maurizio stands on Via Scalini, in the hamlet of Brunate that is also home to the Volta Lighthouse; from Brunate you walk up or take a shuttle.

A church is recorded on the site as early as 1788; the present building dates from the first quarter of the twentieth century. On the front, beneath a row of small arches, a fresco shows the warrior saint on horseback, between two niches with painted figures. Inside are a wooden statue of Saint Maurice and a painting that serves as the altarpiece, with the Madonna and Child between Saint Maurice and the Blessed Maddalena Albrici. Saint Maurice is also, with Saint Andrew, one of the two patrons painted in the vault of Brunate's parish church. From San Maurizio you climb to the CAO car park, where the walk of the mountain huts begins: a mule track through the woods towards Monte Boletto, the Bolettone and the Palanzone.
