Why go

San Rocco is a medieval church at Canzaga, above Pognana Lario, with frescoes by Bartolomeo de Benzi.

The building dates from the thirteenth century: the base of the bell tower retains Romanesque features, while the façade is eighteenth-century. Before its dedication to Saint Roch, it was the parish church of the Holy Trinity. The vault, painted in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, depicts the four Doctors of the Church, medallions of the prophets and the symbols of the Evangelists. A visit can be combined with the walk towards Palanzo along the Strada Regia, between clusters of houses and the slopes above the lake.

  • The path from San Rocco to Palanzo follows a stretch of the Strada Regia, the old road between Como and Bellagio.
  • Below the Canzaga forecourt, at the place called Castello, stood the fortified medieval village of Pognana.
  • In the lanes of Canzaga stand several sculptures made for an international symposium in the summer of 1986.

Highlights

  • The cycle of frescoes on the vault
  • The Virgin and Child and the Trinity on the walls
  • The path with the chapels of the Way of the Cross

Getting there

  • It stands at Canzaga, on Via Canzaga, on the border with Faggeto Lario: from the centre of Pognana you walk up along the path with the chapels of the Way of the Cross. On the Lariana below the village, ASF Autolinee's C130 Como–Bellagio bus stops.
