Why go

The Madonna del Soldo is a church outside Palanzo, overlooking the lake.

It was built in the second half of the sixteenth century.

A porch with columns and round arches stands before the entrance; paintings survive on the interior walls and vaults. A Way of the Cross leads up from the village to the meadow and terrace in front of the church. The name may refer to a toll paid by merchants passing through during the wars between Como and Milan.

  • Palanzo's Way of the Cross, already in place before 1748, ends at the church of the Soldo.

Getting there

  • It stands on Via al Soldo, outside Palanzo, a quarter of an hour from the centre of the hamlet. Provincial road 43 climbs to Palanzo from the Lariana, and the Strada Regia, the old mule track between Brunate and Bellagio, runs through the village.
