Why go

Santa Margherita is Molina's former parish church, beside the cemetery.

Documented since 1181, it retains a Romanesque stone bell tower.

Rebuilding in the late seventeenth century changed the church's orientation: the original façade faced the lake. Romanesque masonry and fragments of frescoes survive in today's façade; the porch was added later. The role of parish church passed to Sant'Antonio Abate, closer to the village centre.

  • The Romanesque stone bell tower.
  • The old masonry and fragments of frescoes on the façade.

Highlights

  • The slender Romanesque bell tower
  • The fragments of frescoes on the front
  • The porch and the fresco above the doorway
  • The bare stone walls inside

Getting there

  • It stands at Molina, the mountain hamlet of Faggeto Lario that the Valle Pliniana divides from Torno: provincial road 43 climbs there from the Lariana, and the Strada Regia, the old mule track between Brunate and Bellagio, runs through the village.
The interior: above the chancel arch the bare stone masonry; over the altar a wooden crucifix on a red cloth, inside a painted Baroque frame, between two memorial tablets.Kaitu · CC0
