Why go

Sant'Ambrogio is Palanzo's parish church, rebuilt in the early seventeenth century in place of a smaller church.

In the thirteenth century it was a chapel of the pieve of Nesso; it is recorded as an independent parish from the sixteenth century. The façade was taken back to exposed stone during restoration in the 1970s. Frescoes with Saint Ambrose survive above the doorway, probably seventeenth-century and later reworked. Inside is a single nave with a barrel vault and two side chapels. The Virgin's chapel holds the eighteenth-century altar that previously served as the high altar.

  • A church whose dedication recalls Palanzo's tie to the Archbishop of Milan.
  • The porch leading to the square and the bare stone front.

Highlights

  • The front taken back to bare stone in the 1970s
  • The eighteenth-century altar in the Virgin's chapel, formerly the high altar
  • The rediscovered frescoes of Saint Peter and Saint Anthony of Padua
  • The porch that leads to the square

Getting there

  • It stands on Piazza Sant'Ambrogio, in the centre of Palanzo, a mountain hamlet of Faggeto Lario: you reach it through a porch, and the Strada Regia runs through the village. Provincial road 43 climbs to Palanzo from the Lariana.
