Why go

Martinico is the oldest part of Dongo, and here stands the Romanesque church of Santa Maria, built between the late eleventh and the twelfth century.

The facade is plain, pierced by a small cross-shaped window; on the flank is a small fourteenth-century side front. Halfway along the right wall of the nave is the fresco of the Madonna of Mercy, with six angels holding up her cloak, probably painted between 1310 and 1315. Other fifteenth-century frescoes and fragments can be seen under the roof along the same wall. The church also keeps a gilded silver cross of 1513 from the workshop of the goldsmith Francesco Ser Gregori.

  • A Romanesque church of the upper lake, in the hamlet of Martinico.
  • The early fourteenth-century Madonna of Mercy.
