Why go

Careno is a hamlet of Nesso built on a steep slope above the lake, between Nesso itself and Pognana.

Its old core has no road for cars: you go down flights of steps to the church of San Martino, almost at water level. The church is Romanesque in origin and dates from the twelfth century: it is already mentioned in a document of Pope Lucius III of 1184. It is built of local stone and keeps sixteenth-century frescoes, among them an Annunciation, long hidden under plaster. In the seventeenth century, as the village grew, a second church was built, Santa Maria Assunta. From the boat, San Martino is two minutes away; those who come by car leave it on the provincial road above the village and walk down a couple of hundred steps.
