Why go

The church of San Sebastiano stands at Caino, a hamlet of Vercana, in a spot with a view of the lake.

It was built in 1644 over a building of about the fifteenth century and has a plain façade. The dedication to Saint Sebastian probably comes from the devotion brought home by local people, who for more than two centuries emigrated to Sicily for work. Inside are the left chapel of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, built in the mid-seventeenth century and decorated in 1668, the altarpiece of the Crucifixion and the restored organ by Giuseppe Alchisio of 1862. There is also a Baroque statue of Saint Rosalia in gilded wood: Vercana's emigrants in Sicily obtained it, like the relics and vestments kept in the church.

  • The bell tower holds three bells cast in Milan by the Fratelli Barigozzi foundry in 1921.
