Why go

Pietra Nairola is an erratic boulder of ghiandone, a coarse-grained granite from the Val Masino.

It stands above Mezzovico in Blevio, at an altitude of 750 metres. Measuring about 7.4 by 4.5 metres, it projects horizontally from the slope above a path. Alpine glaciers carried it here during the Quaternary period. Since 22 May 1984 it has been a regional natural monument, managed by the Comunità Montana del Triangolo Lariano. Its surface bears prehistoric carvings: cup marks, a footprint-shaped sign and a small channel. Two legends tell of the devil playing ball on the stone and of the Virgin holding the boulder back with her mantle.

  • An erratic boulder in the woods of Montepiatto, like the nearby Pietra Pendula.
  • A walk in the woods above the lake's first basin, with its two legends.

Highlights

  • The granite table jutting from the slope
  • The cup marks and signs carved in the stone
  • The chapel of the Madonna a little lower down
  • The old path from Brunate to Montepiatto

Getting there

  • From the hamlet of Mezzovico, in Blevio, a mule track climbs to the chapel of the Madonna; the stone is about a hundred metres higher, on the old path from the Pissarottino of Brunate to Montepiatto.
